By Dave Holcomb
Union coach Phyllis Neshimka might deny that yesterday's game against New Providence had extra meaning, but her girls certainly played like it did. With preferential seeding in the Union County Tournament on the line, Union came out with something to prove, scoring five goals and beating New Providence, 5-1, in Union.
Freshman Alyssa Caggiano registered a hat trick and junior Vanessa Leite had two goals of her own for Union. It was Union's first victory against New Providence since 2010, and just the second in the last six matches dating back to 1996.
Union had intensity from the very beginning of the game. Off a corner kick from Gina Alfano, Leite headed the ball into the net five minutes into the game. Neshimka was pleased with the way her team played, but didn't think it was necessarily because of the county tournament seedings coming out later that day. "We came into it like every game," Neshimka said. "I tell my girls every game they are coming after you,"
Later, Neshimka allowed that the seeding could have had something to do with her team's play. "Maybe our play was a little different because of the seedings. I don't know," Neshimka said with a slight smirk.
Union kept up its intensity with two more goals in the first half. In the 22nd minute, Caggiano scored her first goal to give Union a 2-0 lead. Then, Leite added another goal late in the half with a great shot in the upper part of the goal. New Providence goalkeeper Katie Vigilante could not get a hand on it, and Union led at halftime, 3-1. Caggiano and Leite did not slow down in the second half. Leite took a free kick in the 58th minute, and Caggiano was there in front of the goal to finish the ball. The freshman kneed the ball in mid-air into the net.
Despite Caggiano and Leite combining for all five goals and one assist, the two girls did not believe this was their best game this season. The two girls know each other from club teams and have built up quite a bit of chemistry. "It's an advantage for us because we don't even need to look where each other are," Leite said. "We pretty much know where we are going to be."
Forward Lisa Caprara scored the one goal for New Providence, and it came on one of the few mistakes Union made. Caprara stole a pass at about the 18-yard line and took one touch towards the net. Her shot beat goalkeeper Stephanie Rivero high and to her left.
New Providence nearly scored a second goal with about minute left in the game, but Rivero made a nice save. Union then turned on its intensity again and added its fifth goal, Caggiano's third. "Coach told us we needed to win, but a strong win," Leite said. "We came out here and turned it on."

Glen Ridge girls soccer hopes to repeat as Group 1 champs
Thursday, August 22, 2013
By Nelson Depasquale
Sports Editor - Glen Ridge Voice
After reaching the pinnacle last season, head coach Oscar Viteri and company are hungry for more. Despite the loss of major contributors in Claire Malone, Meghan MacDonald, Paige Smith, Caroline Theile, Maeliosa Barstow and Natasha Dombrowski the team returns a good amount of core players back from their Group 1 Championship-winning run.
One of those core players is still only a sophomore this year, her second season as part of the starting lineup. Tomison Kennedy, the only non-senior Ridger who earned All-Super Essex Conference honors within the American Division last year (she received an honorable mention) is returning.
After a stellar season for a freshman in 2012, Kennedy should be right in the thick of things again for this Glen Ridge offense.
Ryanne Ege was another standout freshman at a position that is usually dominated by seniors. As the goalie, it seemed Ege got better between the sticks with every game she played – especially when it mattered the most.
In five NJSIAA State Tournament games, Ege gave up three goals. She had two shutouts in that span, the last being a Group 1 Title-clinching, 2-0 shutout over Shore High School. On two occasions during that game, Ege made stops that were potential game-savers and both came in the second half.
Emily Gill, who is yet another second-year sophomore in 2013, started last season on the defensive unit. She is also primed to have a solid sophomore campaign.
"Those three freshmen got a boatload of confidence and experience going that far in the State Tournament last season," said coach Viteri. "And that's only going to help us this year. I always want to be competitive with everybody. We go out and try to put a team on the field that's going to compete and try to beat teams, that's our goal every year: beat teams, surprise teams. Last year it was a great State run. Now that they have a taste of that, there's no reason why they can't do it again."
Those three freshman obviously weren't the only part of the winning formula.
Other returning players that got their first taste of the Group 1 title include seniors Caroline Smith, Victoria Finlay and Kristen Liu and juniors Shannon Marhan, Eliza Parrinello and Sam Sikkerbol.
So with only three seniors as of now, this year's Ridger squad will no doubt, be a young one. Even with practices just starting, Viteri believes that as many as two or three incoming freshman have a chance to earn a starting spot.
"I thing they're going to make a big impact," said Viteri of the incoming class. "We're going to be very young in spots this year. But young is good because they'll gain experience, grow up quick as a player. We just need some of these young players to step up. There are quicker decisions, less touches at the varsity level and they have to know what to do before they receive the ball. It's going to be a good year, a challenging year. But I think we have the potential, like always, to do well in the State and County Tournaments."
After starting out at 7-4-2, the Ridgers got hot at the right time last season and rallied towards the end of the season. Glen Ridge finished 15-5-2 to earned the program's second Group 1 title in it's history – both under coach Viteri.
This fall, Glen Ridge hopes to maintain that sense of urgency they found in the State Tournament to try to bring the Ridgers back to defend their Group 1 Title.

2013 Preview - Teams to watch
By Jeremy Schneider
GROUP 1
FAVORITE: Seven players from last year’s team have graduated, but the winning culture at Glen Ridge has been established. A 2-0 victory over Shore gave the Essex County squad the Group 1 title, and the team was one of the biggest surprises of last season. The youngsters from last year’s squad now know not only what its like to play in the big game — they know how to win it. The gauntlet of playing in the Super Essex Conference prepares this Group 1 squad for playoff time, and it will be a tough out in the state tournament.
CONTENDERS: Shore Regional, Waldwick, Haddon Heights, Metuchen, New Providence, Dayton, Midland Park.

New Providence Girls Soccer Tramples Elizabeth, 5-0
by Laila Stedman
NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - The Pioneer girls soccer team sent their seniors off with a bang on Thursday, defeating Elizabeth, 5-0, on Senior Day at Lieder Field.
New Providence striker Erin Fay scored a hat trick, while fellow striker Lisa Caprara and midfielder Maggie Roughley added tallies in the victory. Jen Maluso and Katie Vigilante of the Pioneers split the time in goal and provided a solid backing that kept New Providence on the attack.
“As a team, we did a great job finishing our shots," senior co-captain Anna Crisafis. "We worked well together and continued to press them throughout the entire game.” This Pioneer victory improves their record to 6-8, while the Minutemen drop to 8-2-5.
“I’m very proud of the team today,” New Providence head coach Scott Murphy said. “We played one of our better games of the season, and it was the day we were recognizing the seniors.” The Pioneers look to feed off this win on Tuesday when they take on Union at Lieder Field. SPF Raiders Win Over New Providence
by Connor Smith
SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ -The Scotch Plains-Fanwood (SPF) girls soccer team defeated New Providence, 4-1, on senior day at SPF High School.
Alyssa Riporti lead the 13-0-1 Raiders with two goals. After New Providence scored the first goal of the game, the Raiders answered with four goals of their own. “It’s scary to have played my final regular season home game. I have played here for four years, and now it is almost over,” said Kathryn Cunningham on playing her final regular-season game at Shimme A. Wexler Field.
The Raiders started off slow to begin the game, conceding a goal in the first five minutes, but after that, they began to take control of the game. Cunningham scored the tying goal on a penalty kick. The second goal was off a corner kick in which Alyssa Riporti scored. Tori Baliatico and Riporti added the final two goals for SPF. “We began the game playing frantically, but after we scored our first goal, the game slowed down, and we played a lot better,” said SPF left back Evelyn Logie. The Raiders face Union Saturday night in a Union County Tournament semifinal game at 7:30 p.m. at Arthur L. Johnson High School in Clark.

New Providence Athlete of the Week:
Casey Trezz
by Laila Stedman
NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - Senior girls Soccer team co-captain Casey Trezza has been named The Alternative Press of New Providence's Athlete of the Week for her overall performance to open the 2013 season.
"Casey is a 4-year varsity player and a captain for her senior year," head coach Scott Murphy said. "She is a great leader for our team on and off the field." As a central midfielder, Casey really has to work with everyone on the team and hold them together when they are down.
Murphy recognizes her dedication to the entire team. He said: "The culture of our team is reflective of her attitude and work ethic." Her teammates are also very grateful to have a devoted captain like Casey.
"Casey is such an amazing leader on and off the field," junior goalie Katie Vigilante said. "She is selfless, and is always getting our spirits up when we're down. Her soccer success is well deserved, and I'm excited to see where she'll end up next year. I couldn't have asked for a better captain to look up to!"
Along with her consistent play, Casey has managed to put three goals in the back of the net and has had one assist on the year. Casey is also very grateful for her team. "Being on the Girls’ Soccer team has been the best experience in high school for me and I have loved every second of it," she said.
You can always hear Casey cheering her team up on the field, trying to motivate others. This especially worked to her and her teammates’ benefit last week Thursday, when the Pioneers defeated Oak Knoll 3-2, where Casey scored one of the deciding goals.
The Pioneers' record now lies at 5-8 and Casey has set goals that she knows the whole team wants to meet. "Our goal for the season is to keep getting better every game so we can make a great run in the state tournament," she said. Casey is a well-rounded athlete. To compliment her high school soccer career, this winter will be her third year on the school's Varsity Basketball team. Last season, she netted 81 points for her team.
She hopes to continue her soccer career through college, but is not certain as to where she is going yet. As for basketball, Casey would like to be involved in an intramural team. Casey and the Pioneers will next vie for a victory when they battle Elizabeth on Thursday at Lieder Field.

Gov. Livingston Girls Soccer Outlasts
New Providence, 1-0
by Laila Stedman
NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - The Gov. Livingston girls soccer team continued its success over local rivals on Tuesday, beating New Providence, 1-0, at NP's Lieder Field. Highlander striker Lauren DiStaso scored the game's only goal to lead Gov. Livingston to its ninth victory of the season. The victory gives GL the regular-season sweep over the Pioneers. The Highlanders won the first meeting earlier in the season, 3-1. “That was probably the best eighty minutes we have played all year,” New Providence head coach Scott Murphy said. “We are moving in the right direction as a team and once we start finishing our chances, we will be tough to beat.”
The Pioneers had their chances against Highlander goalkeeper Olivia Emanuel, however she stopped all 15 shots on goal to record GL's third shutout of the season. “We are trying to start playing as a team and with that comes learning from our mistakes,” New Providence captain Ashley Evangelos said. “Today we simply did not finish the chances we had.” New Providence's Jen Maluso and Katie Vigilante combined to stop 15 of the 16 Highlander shots. The Pioneers return to action on Thursday when they visit Oak Knoll, while Gov. Livingston hosts Parsippany. Both contests begin at 4 p.m.

Rahway Defeats New Providence Girls Soccer in Union County Tournament
by Laila Stedman
NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - The Rahway girls’ soccer team defeated New Providence, 2-1, in the first round of the Union County Tournament on Saturday at Lieder Field. After a scoreless first half, the second half proved to be a more exciting one, but an emotional rollercoaster for both the Pioneers and the Indians at the same time.
In the 54th minute, Indians’ midfielder Catalina Lozano managed to put one in the back of the net, giving Rahway a one-goal lead. With the Pioneers pressing hard in their offensive third, NP defender Anna Crisafi crossed the ball into a mass in front of the goal for fellow defender Ashley Evangelos to head it in and tie the game up. Just minutes before the final whistle, Lozano scored once more, rocketing the ball into the net, sending the Rahway crowd into a frenzy.
Despite the final Pioneer attempt to tie the game again, they failed to put any shots in the goal, ending their UCT run after one game. Obviously the result is not what we wanted, but we will take it as a learning experience,” New Providence senior Casey Trezza said. “It was definitely disappointing, but we will take the positives and grow from it.” The Pioneers return to action on Tuesday when they host Gov. Livingston at 4 p.m.

Westfield Girls Soccer Team Defeats
New Providence, 4-1
by Laila Stedman
NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ -- The Westfield girls soccer team defeated New Providence, 4-1, on Tuesday at Lieder Field. Blue Devil forward Hannah Liddy scored twice, leading Westfield to its seventh victory of the season. “Despite the score, New Providence played a very good game,” Pioneer head coach Scott Murphy said. “We played hard and together. There were many positives we can build on from this game.” Liddy opened the game with a score four minutes into the first half. Less than five minutes later, Westfield striker Jenna Helfand poked the ball into the back of the net to give the Blue Devils a 2-0 lead.
Midway through the first half, Liddy scored her second strike of the game, giving Westfield a 3-0 lead. After coming up empty in the first half, New Providence broke the shutout with 15 minutes to play when the Pioneers drew a free kick after a Westfield hand ball. New Providence defender Megan Mahlstadt lofted the ball into the penalty box where center midfielder Maggie Roughley finished it off with a well aimed, jumping header to score the Pioneers’ first and only goal of the game. Lily Defelice extended the Blue Devil lead back to three goals on a simple pass into the net off a square ball later in the match, as the Blue Devils improve to 7-2 on the season.
With the defeat, the Pioneers drop to 3-5. New Providence captain Casey Trezza said she was happy with the way her team fought against the Blue Devils. “Westfield is a really tough team, but we held our own and never gave up,” she said. “The result doesn’t tell the whole story. We are just looking to continue to improve game after game.” New Providence hopes to rebound from the defeat on Thursday when the Pioneers visit Summit. Young New Providence Girls' Soccer Team
Sets High Goals for 2013
by Nick Papadimas
NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ – The 2013 Pioneer girls’ soccer team will look a lot different than they did a year ago. Having lost three key contributors in Jenna Madden, Kelly Carroll and Jocelyn Andrae, New Providence head coach Scott Murphy will need to rely on a new group of student-athletes to reach their goal of county and sectional championships.
Led by senior captain Casey Trezza, the Pioneers will show a young lineup, including freshman Brielle Carleen, sophomore Megan Mahlstadt and juniors Paige Kovacs and Katie Vigilante. Despite the inexperience, the girls opened the season with a 3-0 victory over Bayonne on Friday. Trezza hopes to see the same outcome throughout the year.
“Our team will do very well this year,” she said. The Pioneers face a tough schedule in 2013, including matches against neighborhood foes Summit and Gov. Livingston during the course of the season. New Providence will also see Cranford, Scotch Plains-Fanwood and Westfield, all of whom will compete for a county championship this year.
Murphy sees the schedule as one that could lead the Pioneers into a competitive future. With the addition of several larger NJSIAA Group 3 schools, the Pioneers will see a higher level of competition, which Murphy will use to test his young team. The Pioneers continue their season on Tuesday when they host J.P. Stevens on Lieder Field at 4 p.m.

Evangelos Signs On to Play Soccer for Rhode Island
by Tim LeCras
NEW PROVIDENCE, N.J. – Ashley Evangelos made a big decision after her freshman year at New Providence High School. After seeing varsity girls’ soccer competition sparingly during her rookie campaign, Evangelos came to the conclusion that she would one day play NCAA Division 1 soccer.
Her goal became a reality on Friday in the NPHS Media Center. Surrounded by her family and friends, Evangelos signed her National Letter of Intent to play soccer at the University of Rhode Island.
“Its like a sense of relief,” Evangelos said. “I know where I’m going, I’m excited to be going there. I’m studying nursing and playing soccer. Its what I always wanted to do.”
New Providence High Schools girls’ soccer coach Scott Murphy saw something special in Evangelos during her freshman season.
Although she started her first year coming off the bench, Evangelos fought her way into the starting lineup towards the end of the season, eventually playing a big factor in the Pioneers’ state championship run.
It was this type of work that set her apart from the rest of the team.
“She was just very athletic and strong for her age,” Murphy said. In girls soccer, that’s one of the things you look for, along with skill, is can they compete against 18 year olds.”
After Evangelos won her first championship, Murphy said she has improved 100 percent each year in different aspects of the game.
“As a freshman, it was more strength, agility, athleticism,” he said. “It slowly became her skills each year. Junior year and senior year, it became the on-field leader and to just understanding the game. Each year she came back, I would tell my assistants ‘Wait until you see Ash because she’s so much better than she was last year.’”
Evangelos was heavily recruited by local schools such as Monmouth and Seton Hall, however once she visited Rhode Island she fell in love with the team, school and educational program.
She is one of three New Jersey-products to sign with Rhode Island. Head coach Michael Needham called the 2014 recruiting class “special,” adding the team will be “the most competitive” he has seen since becoming the head coach in 2011.
“This group will accentuate the strong returning core that we have,” Needham said in a URI press release. “As we evaluate going forward, one area that we were lacking last year was the depth to compete when we got to conference play. This is not the case anymore. The addition of these players and the return of several players from injury will make for a very dangerous team over the next several years.”
Needham expects Evangelos to contribute in a big way when she gets to campus in early August.
“Ashley will be a versatile defender for us,” he said. “She has the technical ability to set play from the back and the athleticism to play either centrally or on one of the flanks."
The Alternative Press of New Providence would like to congratulate Ashley Evangelos for signing with the University of Rhode Island to play soccer beginning in August.
