Kaleigh Brennan and Helen Johnson each scored to lead Summit past New Providence, 2-0, in New Providence. Callie Humphrey made seven saves for Summit in the shutout. Jen Maluso stopped five shots for New Providence.
By BRETT CAMINITI
Helen Johnson’s 17th-minute goal proved to be enough for the Hilltoppers, as Summit muscled its way past New Providence in the Lady Pioneers' girls soccer home opener. Riddled with minor injuries that sidelined multiple New Providence starters, as well as eight players seeing major action for the first time in their careers, the home side was unable to overcome their inexperience and the miserable weather, failing to convert on any scoring chances they had throughout. “Since preseason, we’ve been trying to figure out how to convert on those (scoring) chances,” head coach Scott Murphy said. “We need to get a little more active and physical up front and put more pressure on their defenders and make those defenders make decisions they don’t want to have to make.”
The pouring rain that came down throughout Thursday’s game made for rough conditions, as both sides had a difficult time adjusting to the slow field condition the monsoon caused. Play throughout the first half, other than Johnson’s tally from just outside the 18-yard box, was more or less sloppy as neither team could get a rhythm going on the offensive end.
“As parts of the field got more and more flooded, we weren’t able to make short combo passes like we wanted to,” Murphy said on his game plan in the inclement weather. “Even though it’s not the way we like to play, we had to try and play the ball deep and create from there...Unfortunately for us, their goalie was very active and cleaned up everything that came her way.”
The trio of Maggie Roughley, Lexi Everton, and Riley Kinum were able to muster up a few decent chances on the Summit end when the deficit was only one, but they were ultimately unable to slip one past Hilltopper net minder Callie Humphrey, who recorded seven saves.
Kaleigh Brennan sent home the dagger in the 69th minute, slamming an un-savable shot past New Providence goalie Jen Maluso, all but ending the game. The Lady Pioneers seek their first win of the season on Saturday when they take on Elizabeth with kick-off scheduled for 2 p.m.

NJSIAA Bumps New Providence Up to Group 2, Causing Uneasiness Among Coaches
By TIM LECRAS
NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ – Pioneer girls’ soccer head coach Scott Murphy was walking onto Lieder Field last week getting prepared for a late summer practice. Just days earlier, Murphy informed his squad that they, and the rest of the New Providence fall athletic programs, were moving up to Central Jersey, Group 2 should they qualify for the NJSIAA state tournament in November.
As he walked across the field towards his team, Murphy was stopped by one of the cross-country coaches, who asked if he was “happy to be moving back to Group 1?” A surprised Murphy checked his phone and saw the latest “NJSIAA Girls’ Soccer Classifications” revealing the Lady Pioneers were in fact remaining in Group 1.
Murphy said a move from Group 1 to Group 2 would have definitely affected his team, due to the higher level of talent as you move to a higher group.
“When the whole thing came out, football was separate, but everything else was together,” Murphy said. “Then a couple of days later they came out with boys’ soccer and girls’ soccer. Had we been in Group 2 Central, it would have been challenging for us because you have the Rumsons and the Manasquans and the teams of that level.”
Such is apparently a new norm for high school athletics in New Jersey. On Aug. 24, the state’s governing body for interscholastic athletics revealed updated competition classifications, a necessary evil in trying to keep schools evenly grouped together by size and hopefully then, hopefully, talent. Over the course of the next three days, the original classifications were effectively thrown out, as the NJSIAA released new classifications for almost all of the specific sports (football, girls’ volleyball, boys’ and girls’ soccer, field hockey, girls’ tennis and cross country.)
For New Providence, a school that has almost always been a Group 1 school, the Pioneers now have a mixed identity. While girls’ soccer, cross country, girls’ tennis and girls’ volleyball remain in Group 1, football and boys’ soccer move up to Group 2, which means a tougher road to a potential state championship.
“I think the thing that we always talk to our kids about is we have to worry about things we can control,” Carollo said. “We can control how we play. We can control our effort. We can control getting better as a football program. We can’t control what the NJSIAA does. I don’t even think they control it.”
Carollo’s frustration with the NJSIAA goes deeper than his team moving up a class, it also has to do with potential opponents come November. For reasons unknown to Carollo, Lincoln High School, from Jersey City, was also placed in the Central, Group 2, while the rest of their Hudson County-area schools are in northern sections.
“They don’t have a clue what they’re doing,” Carollo said. “They don’t respond to questions. How is Lincoln, Jersey City, in Central and the rest of Jersey City is North. They don’t have any answer for that and that’s fine. If you’re going to get yourself worked up over that, that’s a mistake.”
Boys’ soccer head coach Jon Panella doesn’t see the same issues. Because of regular season, conference and county opponents, such as Westfield, Scotch Plains-Fanwood and Oratory Prep, smaller Union County schools, like New Providence, are well tested by the time the state tournament comes around.
“It doesn’t faze me at all,” Panella said. “Good teams are going to win no matter what group you are. I’ve seen it happen before. I’m spinning it as a positive because now we don’t have to play Harrison until the state finals as opposed to the section semifinal where we played them last year.”
Fall sports begin on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

Roughley and Company Bring Changes to New Providence
By TIM LECRAS
Like many of the other varsity programs at New Providence High School, the girls’ soccer team experienced a significant turnover from last year’s squad. However, unlike their counterparts, the loss of one significant piece from last year has changed the entire dynamic of 13 year head coach Scott Murphy’s Lady Pioneers.
Gone are the days of Murphy and company hearing the booming voice of former captain Pioneer Lisa Caprara, as she streaked down the pitch, open and looking to score. The mere thought of not having Caprara at Lieder Field has brought a new identity to New Providence, one that brings a more team-oriented approach.
“It’s different,” Murphy said. “We know that we lost a lot of goals from her, but knowing that we're looking to come more balanced in our attack. If we for example, score 50 goals this year and get five girls who get 10, it becomes much harder to defend. There were times last year where other teams doubled her and we didn't have that other option to stretch other defenders away from her.”
Enter Maggie Roughley and Lexi Everton into the picture. Relatively new faces in terms of the spotlight, but a duo of attack-oriented players tasked with not only replacing part of the goals New Providence lost when Caprara graduated, but also leading a squad that will include freshman and sophomores seeing regular time on the pitch.
“Maggie Roughley is the one that when she’s on the field she’ll talk,” Murphy said. “Even more so than what Lisa gave last year, is she’ll communicate direction and detail which helps the younger kids know where to play the ball if they have the ball. Everyone knows for the most part that she’s our top player.”
While Roughley may be the vocal leader to replace Caprara, it very well might be Everton who shows New Providence’s new faces exactly what is expected when they’re on the field, creating a two-pronged leadership built for success.
“I think it will definitely benefit because the underclassmen can see how we’re leading in a different way,” Roughley said of the team’s new leadership style. “We’re trying to have a cohesive group. On the field, its not freshman or seniors, its just one team that we’re trying to have work together and keep it calm out there, not panicky. We have high hopes for this season.
Clearly, from the looks of practice and the response from Murphy and Roughley, gone are the days of relying on a single player to score all of the goals. This year, the Pioneers expect a team-wide effort to reach the pinnacle goal of all high school athletic teams, a state championship.
While you may see the occasional long distance goal, starting with passes from closer to midfield, Murphy expects a lot more scrappy goals, which plays right into the game Everton excels at.
“She’s very scrappy,” Murphy said. “That’s the kind of thing we want to build through our forwards. We’re not going to have many forwards who did what Lisa did, take defenders one-on-one and score. There’s going to be a lot of scrappy goals, where its just a fight inside the box and you poke the ball into the net. She’s kind of our leader in terms of playing that style.”
The only true mainstay from years past is at the backend, as goalkeeper Jen Maluso returns for her senior campaign. Maluso has done nothing short of meeting every expectation Murphy has ever had for her, creating a level of comfort amongst the rest of her teammates.
“Knowing that we have Jen back there defending us and being that strong leader out there and communicating with her backs, it takes a load off the offensive leaders knowing she has the backs organized,” Roughley said. “Its just so calming. Its not like when there is a breakaway, ‘Oh, we’re going to be down.” Its like ‘Come on Jen, you can do it. We have faith in you.’ Its really peaceful having her back there.”
Murphy, Roughley, Everton, Maluso and company being their trek for a state title on Thursday when they host Summit at Lieder Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.

The Summit High School Girls Varsity Soccer Team completed a regular season sweep of their neighbors New Providence with a 3-0 victory at Tatlock Park. Previously, the Hilltoppers had beaten the Pioneers 2-0 at New Providence September 10. Seniors Morgan Strabley and Maggie Moriarty, along with sophomore Kaleigh Brennan all found the back of the net for Summit, and Callie Humphrey -- buoyed by stout team possession and defense in front of her -- picked up the "clean sheet." Summit had the majority of the ball and was moving freely from back to front throughout the match, with midfield maestro Moriarty pulling the strings, playing through balls to on-running outside midfielders and strikers. In the sixth minute, Moriarty played Strabley down the right sideline and her shot found the far corner of the goal to put the Hilltoppers up 1-nil.
In the second half, Brennan tackled the ball away from a New Providence player 30 yards from goal on the left side. Brennan proceeded to dribble across the top of the area and finished with a right footed shot that deflected off a defender into the goal. Up 2-nil after 42 minutes, Summit had all the momentum, and completed their scoring when Moriarty -- in the 59th minute -- took a short pass from Delaney O'Dowd at the top of the box, pushed the ball past a Pioneer defender, and shot into the far corner. With the victory, Summit improves to 4-2-1 on the campaign heading into a September 28 match at Livingston. Kick off is slated for 6 p.m.

Girls Soccer Star Maggie Roughley Officially Signs Letter of Intent to Play at Fordham
By BRETT CAMINITI
NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - After three prosperous seasons starring on the offensive side for the Lady Pioneer’s soccer team, senior Maggie Roughley officially signed her letter of intent to play soccer at Fordham University next fall this past Thursday in front of many friends and family.
Roughley, despite having an injury plagued 2015, was able to tally a career high eight goals this season, in addition to chipping in four assists along the way.
Over the past three years, there is no doubt Maggie led by example on the field, as she scored 21 goals and assisted 14 times, however head coach Scott Murphy believes she will be missed even more as a leader and a teammate.
“Losing someone like Maggie with her leadership and on the field abilities is hard to replace,” Murphy said. “(She’s) a great role model on and off the field.”
Roughley, who on top of playing for the varsity team, played for PDA, a highly touted soccer development program, believes she is ready for the rigors of Division I soccer after years of preparation.
All of the preparation I have gone through with the teams, coaches, and players have helped make me the player I am today,” Roughley said. “Meeting the team and coaches has been so positive and everyone is so excited for the new recruits.”
“It’s a great positive environment and I can’t wait to get there,” she said.
Roughley will look to make an instant impact on the Ram squad, who is coming off a 13-7-2 2015 campaign, as her offensive prowess and great team oriented mentality will undoubtedly help the Rams have another successful season in the Bronx.
“We know that when you (Roughley) get to Fordham you will be the same competitor and a positive leader,” Murphy said in his speech to the senior. “Fordham is very lucky to be getting someone like you.”
“I know you are going to be awesome.” said Murphy.
There is no doubt that Maggie will be able to carry on her high school success on and off the field as for four more years at a great university with great athletics and academics as well. She plans to study in either the business or veterinary school, as Fordham’s strong programs in both those fields played a major role in her ultimate decision.
Be sure to catch Roughley in action next fall in the Bronx as the Rams kick off their season in August of 2016
