New Providence Girl’s Varsity Soccer Blanked in Home Opener
By MATT LAMB
NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - Saturday’s scorching hot Girl’s Varsity Soccer showdown at Lieder Field between New Providence and Union High School resulted in a 5-0 victory for Union, as four first half goals proved to be too much for the Pioneers on a 94 degree day.
New Providence (0-2-0) had a difficult time getting any offense going in their first home game of the season, especially early on, and two goals in the first seven minutes from the Farmers, both netted by Alyssa Caggiano, proved to be a tough force to stop. Head Coach Scott Murphy noted that despite the loss, the team still hit key points of emphasis that were addressed after their 4-0 loss to Summit.
“One of our big issues after that game was communication with all of the positions,” he said. “I think we did a better job with that today than on Thursday, but I know it is something we can still work on.”
Union jumped out to the early lead when Caggiano scored from nearly the same spot on the right side of the box, and put pressure on New Providence on both sides of the ball. The Pioneers came out of the gates a bit slow, but progressively found ways to get involved on the offensive side, as well as stopping Union’s attacks.
Sophomore goalkeeper Erin Lamanna was certainly tested on Saturday, however she made the best of what was kicked her way, recording five saves on the day. She snared a few line drive shot attempts by Union, most notably in the 15th minute
Despite allowing five goals, the Pioneer defense also gave Union a tough time throughout the game. Senior captains Brielle Carleen and Kelly Sherman were among those to alter Union’s shots and stop some of their attacks.
The closest New Providence was to scoring was on consecutive opportunities in the first half. A shot attempt in the 29th minute was saved, nearly sneaking its way in between Union’s goalkeeper and the near post. A give and go play for Riley Kinum was also saved in the 32nd minute.
A goal on a counter attack in the 31st minute and a strike from nearly 35 yards out in the 38th minute would give Union the 4-0 lead heading into the half. Coaches and referees also agreed on having a brief rest period near the midway point of each half to allow the players to get water and avoid any heat-related issues.
The second half was much more even in terms of possession and scoring opportunities, as Union only ended up with a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal. The defense heightened for the Pioneers, and they attacked more, getting great runs from sophomore Olivia Faucher out wide, however New Providence’s cross attempts never found their way into the back of the net.
The only goal Union scored in the second half was on a counter attack after saving a Pioneer cross. Union’s goalkeeper soared the ball past the defense and to Kayla Miller-People, who skated the ball past Lamanna in the 49th minute.
Communication was something that Murphy still believes can be improved going into the next game.
“One or two of the goals were given up due to not communicating so we can still work on that,” he said. “But I don’t see any drastic changes being made. We’re young on the field and we to work together to try and build something going forward.”
He also sees the squad rebounding from this game, as it proved to be a learning experience.
“They’re mature enough to understand that if we continue to do certain things well, then other things will fall into place. I thought the effort was there today, but we played a really good team today and we just need to communicate better first and foremost,” Murphy said.
New Providence will look to get in the win column and rebound after their first two losses when they next play on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 4 p.m. when they go on the road to take on Oak Knoll.

New Providence Girls Soccer Sense a Rebound on the Horizon
By ANTOINE WILLIAMS
NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - Despite last season’s 8-14 record, New Providence girls soccer head coach Scott Murphy is very optimistic about this season.
Maybe Murphy is optimistic because his squad returns a decent amount of players, including six seniors, who gained valuable varsity experience last season.
Maybe he’s optimistic because his team has shown much improvement on the field thusfar in preseason workouts.
Or maybe he’s optimistic because he has a gut feeling that last season was a fluke.
Or maybe, just maybe, it’s all of the above.
But one thing is for sure: Murphy’s optimism has translated to his team.
“We return six starters, plus many girls who gained valuable varsity experience,” Murphy, who’s entering his 14th season as head coach, said. “Combine that with a group of younger talent, and the Pioneers looked poised to improve upon last season’s record.”
Among those key returning players are senior defenders Brielle Carleen, Rebecca Pappas, and Kelly Sherman.
Murphy couldn’t be more proud of the trio for taking over the leadership roles that were occupied last season by the recently-graduated quartet of Maggie Roughley, Jen Maluso, Megan Mahlstadt, and Lexi Everton.
Senior Jessica Trackhim and sophomore Nicole Fusco rounds out this season’s defender group.
Junior Riley Kinum will anchor the midfield and she’ll be joined by sophomore Alana Ponte.
Seniors Jordan Detlet and Rachel Trackhim will anchor the forward group and will be joined by junior Amanda Maurer and sophomore Olivia Faucher.
Sophomore Erin Lamanna will replace Maluso at goalkeeper. Freshmen Maddy Engelbrechten, Juliana DeGeorge, and Paola Salazar round out this year’s newcomers.
In addition to his seniors, Murphy suggests to keep an eye on a trio of sophomores who could play big roles in the team’s success. “Sophomores Nicole Fusco, Olivia Faucher, and Alana Ponte are poised to have breakout seasons.”
Murphy has been very happy with his team’s work over the summer and even happier that the work ethic transferred over to the preseason.
“The team has been working hard all summer and has really displayed improved ability to possess the ball and play at a faster rate,” Murphy said. He will be looking for a few girls to step up and take over the goal-scoring role.
“The talent is there to have an improved season, but I feel the closeness of this group of girls could lead to a very special season,” said Murphy, who is 11 wins away from 200 as head coach.
A very special season in Murphy’s mind are capturing conference and sectional titles. Considering Murphy’s resume as head coach and the experience he has returning this season, don’t count this New Providence team out.

Last-Minute Goal Pushes New Providence Girls Soccer
to First Win of the Season
By MATT LAMB
It took 79 minutes for the only goal of the game to get into the back of the net, but it was senior forward Rachel Trackim who found the back of the net with less than 30 seconds to go to give the New Providence Girls Soccer Team the 1-0 win over Union Catholic on Thursday at Lieder Field, securing the Pioneers' first victory.
In a game where each team was fighting for control of possession and opportunities, there were several close chances for New Providence (1-4) near the end of the game, and after several attempts, Trackim was the one who put this game away.
“I was really really excited,” Trackim said. “I got a great kick in and followed the ball like we’re always supposed to, and went in, I was like ‘oh my gosh, it went in’ and I was jumping up and down and my head hurt so much from smiling.”
This was not only the first goal of the season for Trackim, but for the entire New Providence team. Coach Scott Murphy expressed his thought on his team’s offensive output.
“Coming off our losses and not scoring a goal, we talked about putting everything in the past and focusing on making the right plays and even though it took a while, we got the goal we needed,” Murphy said. “All it takes is a little hard work to get some breaks and we were able to get them on corner kicks and ultimately on the game winning free kick.”
Union Catholic and New Providence gave each other all they could handle in the first half. Both were relentless on defense, making it difficult to get many attacks going. Freshman forward Maddy Engelbrechtsen had a few opportunities early on, including a nice run up the left side of the field in the 7th minute and a shot off a lob pass from the midfield, but neither could find the goal.
The majority of the first half featured the two teams utilizing the far ends and corners of the fields for their attacking, attempting to get in a cross. New Providence’s sophomore midfielder Olivia Faucher was a key catalyst in setting up some of the attacks and long runs, being a presence in the middle of the field. She also had a few runs of her own, including a shot in the 17th minute that sailed wide right of the goal.
While possession was nearly even for most of the first half, the Pioneers turned on the jets near the end of the half, consistently keeping the ball in Union Catholic’s third of the field and near the box, getting help by the forwards and midfield controlling the ball and getting it back if they lost possession. A great run featuring a juke move from sophomore midfielder Alana Ponte but a saved shot and another missed shot from Engelbrechtsen came before the whistle blew to end the first half.
The momentum the Pioneers had going into the half was cut abruptly, early in the second half, as the Vikings stormed into the second half -- racing down the field to get off three clean shots in the first six minutes of action. New Providence got saves on goal and good defense from captains Brielle Carleen and Kelly Sherman to limit Union Catholic’s chances early on.
After about 15 minutes of Union Catholic attacking, New Providence came to life. A few corner kicks around the 59th minute resulted in decent opportunities in the box, as junior midfielder Riley Kinum delivered good balls in on the corners.
New Providence would continue to see opportunities in the second half, including three consecutive corners around the 68th minute. While none of them crossed the goal line, they allowed the Pioneers to control the pace of the game and continue to attack and keep the ball up off of their own half of the field.
The Pioneers had six corners altogether, as the Vikings (0-6) had none. New Providence also outshot Union Catholic 7-4, including 6-2 in shots on goal. They also had more saves (5-3) and committed less fouls (1-7).
There was a glimpse of hope that New Providence would win the game in the 78th minute, but an excellent free kick attempt from Carleen was saved at the near post.
However, that thought became reality just over a minute later. A ball in on the free kick from Kinum stayed in the box for a few second before Trackim booted the ball past the Vikings’ goalkeeper to put the game away after fighting all game.
“It wasn't even for just the full 80 minutes- we’ve been fighting all season for this,” Trackim said. “We were strong in the preseason but once the season started we hit a dip so I think this can get us back into it. We possessed really well today and we fought to the end and we earned it today.”
For Coach Murphy, he believes that this is exactly what the Pioneers were looking for not only today, but also all season in order to lift their spirits and help them get back on track.
“Sometimes when you’re going up against bigger teams that are a little bit better than you that fight doesn't show, but today, we improved our fight level and it came out on the field today,” Murphy said. “Cranford will be very good, but if we keep our same level of intensity and drive as we did today, we’ll be happy with the result we get.”
New Providence will look to continue this momentum on the road on Saturday at 11 a.m. when they take on Cranford High School.

Gov. Livingston Holds On to Defeat
New Providence, 3-2
Governor Livingston Highlanders held onto a 3-2 victory after a late in the game NewProvidence surge on Tuesday at GL. Both teams entered this competition with just one win on the season.
The Highlanders hope to build on this two game winning streak to turn the season around as they enter the Union County Tournament as the seventh seed; New Providence is the 11th seed.
The Pioneers knew coming in that the Highlanders were better than their 1-5 record. "They are always good, they play smart and clean. The coach does a good job," said New Providence coach Scott Murphy.
The Highlanders dominated the first half, working the ball with effective ball control, smart looks and passes. However, they wouldn't score until the 39th minute when sophomore Emily Pires found an opening and lofted a shot past junior goalie Amanda Mauer to go into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
The second half saw much of the the same GL control and by the middle of the second half Highlander junior forward Maggie Zecca netted two goals and gave GL a 3-0 lead.
Zecca thinks that the Highlanders held onto their momentum from Saturday's big 3-1 win against Johnson that gave themthe necessary confidence to come out strong.
However, this dominance abruptly shifted when New Providence changed their formation and built off the momentum when Pioneer junior Riley Kinum won a scramble in front of goal and a shot ricocheted past goalie Michelle Coyle.
Once the Pioneers were on the board, they intensified their pressure, taking control away from the Highlanders. They seemed to have been shot out of a cannon as they had started to have more and more possession and took over the game. Towards the end of the game, the Pioneers had scored again with a goal by Jordan Detlet making the game 3-2, and had everyone on the edge of their seats.
“We changed our formation a little bit to play more direct… we picked up our intensity and picked up our energy more. Something clicks and you take it from there,” said Murphy.
Time expired before the Pioneers were able to strike again and the Highlanders held onto their 3-2 lead for the victory.
Highlander goalie Michelle Coyle recorded three saves, while Pioneer goalie Amanda Mauer recorded seven saves in the game.
The Highlanders will next take on Rahway, Thursday, Sept. 29 on the road. Pioneers will host Westfield on Thursday, Sept. 29. Both games have a 4 p.m. start.

New Providence Pioneers Fall to Union Catholic in Opening Round of UCT
By ANTOINE WILLIAMS
NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ -In the opening round of the Union County Tournament, the New Providence Pioneers girls soccer team suffered a surprising 3-0 defeat to the Union Catholic Vikings on Tuesday. With the loss, New Providence fell to 1-7 while Union Catholic picked up its first win of the season after opening the season with seven consecutive losses.
Union Catholic avenged a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to New Providence earlier this season. The Pioneers scored the game’s lone goal with about 30 seconds remaining. It was a game Union Catholic head coach Jim Revel and his veteran squad certainly didn’t forget and on Tuesday, they got their revenge.
“Going in, I didn’t have to tell the girls much of anything,” Rivel said. “We have talked about the last game against New Providence but we didn’t harp on it.”
Sign Up for E-News
It wasn’t hard to realize that the Vikings struggled offensively in the teams’ last meeting so Rivel made a lineup switch that paid dividends offensively this time out.
“We made a few different changes to the lineup coming in,” Rivel said. “The difference this time around was we moved the girls that usually play in the midfield up to the front.”
Tuesday’s matchup was a defensive battle in the game’s early goings but that changed when Viking Chynna Adorno crossed on the right side and got the ball behind New Providence goalie Amanda Maurer when Amanda Scheidmann found the back of the net for the game’s first goal.
How the first goal was a subshot of the Pioneers’ issues in losing one-on-one battles throughout the game. The Pioneers did have their fair share of nice passes and got the ball up the field on several occasions but had a tough time breaking past a stout group of Viking defenders.
As for those Vikings defenders, Rivel couldn’t have been more proud of his team’s defense.
“Our defense played well today,” Rivel said. “We showed today that we can compete with some of the stronger teams in our division.”
The Vikings struck again when Sophia Alves found an opening and had just enough time to line a perfectly lofted shot in the upper right side just above Maurer's reach.
Down 2-0, the Pioneers came into the second half with more fire and determination to win those one-on-one matchups but unfortunately for the Pioneers, the Vikings took their physical play to another level.
The teams fought tooth-and-nail for much of the second half. But with just over 19 minutes remaining in the game, the Vikings scored what would be the game’s final goal when Olivia Yarem connected on a pass from Chynna Adorno in front of the goal .
“This was a self-motivating win primarily because it was a Union County Tournament game and the girls knew what was at-stake,” Rivel said. “We have a decent group of seniors on this team. They knew the first game was anybody’s game and they were determined to have a different outcome this time around.”
Maurer recorded 8 saves, while Union Catholic goalie Izzy DiDario recorded 6.

New Providence Seizes Revenge in a 2-0
Victory Against Gov. Livingston

NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ- After a previous disappointing 3-2 defeat against the Highlanders, the Pioneers returned to their home turf with a newfound resilience, dominating both sides of the field throughout the match..New Providence’s aggressive play combined with Gov. Livingston’s inability to generate an offensive spark, allowed the Pioneers to secure a redeeming win against their neighboring rivals and solidify their spot in the NJ State Tournament.
With the Highlanders coming off a tough loss to Cranford and the Pioneers seeking a seed in the States, both teams were determined to perform well in order to capture a much-needed victory. At the start, New Providence was able to dominate offensively, cracking the Highlander defense with a sequence of imposing shots on goal. Gov. Livingston goalkeeper, Michelle Coyle, was able to successfully stave off the offensive blitz, stunting the Pioneers early attempts.
The Highlander countered New Providence’s offensive performance with a series of offensive attacks, which included one-on-one breakaways by sophomore Emily Pires. Pires managed to get shots on goal, however, those attempts were flawlessly defended by sophomore Pioneer goalie, Erin Lamanna.
It was not until the end of the first half that New Providence was able to break the deadlock.Junior Pioneer Jessie Brenner fired a shot off a free kick over Coyle into upper-right corner of the net, recording the first goal of the game. The Highlanders immediately retaliated with a shot on goal by forward Maggie Zecca, only to be denied by Lamanna. Brenner’s goal at the end of the half allowed New Providence to retire to the sidelines carrying the momentum, while the Highlander squad looked to improve their performance.
Gov. Livingston returned to the field in the second half reenergized in hopes of bringing a new charge to the turf. The Highlanders’ defensive pressure impeded the Pioneers’ offensive attacks. Gov. Livingston also penetrated New Providence’s tight defense but were unfortunately unable to finish. However, the Pioneers were able to regain their offensive momentum when freshmen Maddy Engelbrechtsen was able to break away from the Highlander defense and fire a shot into bottom left corner of the goal, cementing New Providence’s lead. Although the Highlanders managed to string together a sequence of shots on goal, Gov. Livingston’s inability to finish resulted in a 2-0 Highlander defeat.
Junior Pioneer Jessie Brenner commented on the sweet triumph. “We knew the game was going to be tough,” said Brenner. “We gave it all we had and left everything out on the field to bring home a 2-0 win.”
New Providence head coach, Scott Murphy, also talked about the Pioneers’ mental state heading into the match. “The challenge to them was to come out and play against a very good team,” said Murphy. “I think our determination showed.”
Although the Highlanders were disappointed with the loss, Gov. Livingston is now focusing next few games. “We definitely were not happy with this loss,” said midfielder Ashley Echeverry. “I think if we keep our composure and have more confidence in front of the net our offensive performance will get better.”
