NORTH JERSEY, SECTION 2, GROUP 1 PREVIEW

FAVORITE:
Whippany Park has outscored teams 81-9 this season, suffering just two one-goal losses this season. Silvano Poulter has led the way with 25 goals and 14 assists, but the offensive juggernaut has gotten at least four goals from eight different players this season. Natalie Turok is second on Whippany Park with 14 assists and also has six goals.

CONTENDERS:
While Glen Ridge, and Hoboken could all put up a fight in the bracket, Whippany Park is really in a class of its own. That's not to say the other teams haven't been tested this year. Glen Ridge did make it to the quarterfinal of the Essex County Tournament and give Livingston a hard time, and Jaeda and Alizea Henriquez have helped Hoboken to a 13-4 record this season./school/succasunna-roxbury/girlssoccer/
DARK HORSE: Belvidere had 12 wins while playing in the Skyland Conference, with Brieann Opdyke leading with 15 goals and 10 assists. It only had one loss by more than a goal, and went 1-1-0 against a good defensive team in Gill St. Bernard's.

OTHER PLAYERS TO WATCH:
Savannah Smith and Gabriella Marques both had double-digit goal totals for fifth-seeded North Arlington. Marta Silva scored 32 goals for Harrison, including a eight in a single game in late September.

HOBOKEN, NJ - After clawing back from conceding the first goal against Hoboken on Tuesday, New Providence flipped the switch into attack mode knowing their season was on the line, and pulled out two unanswered goals, including one in overtime, to defeat the Redwings 2-1 in Hoboken in a thriller.

The Pioneers (4-12-2, 2-6 UCC Valley) got a huge lift from Riley Kinum, who netted both of New Providence’s goals, including the one to keep their season alive. After Hoboken scored at the beginning of the second half to take the 1-0 lead, Kinum scored 11 minutes later to tie the game, and then within the first six minutes of overtime to steal the game as the 14-seed versus the 3-seed, also getting one of the goals on an assist from Jordan Detlet. Head Coach Scott Murphy was more than proud of the team’s effort Tuesday.

“It was a great opportunity to make a statement,” he said. “We came out tight early on but our goal settled us in and it could have went either way, but we were ready to come out with a victory.”

New Providence was on the attack all game long, controlling possession and pushing the pace throughout the duration of the game. New Providence took 31 shots and 18 of them were on goal, as opposed to Hoboken’s three total shots and two on goal. The Redwings as a result recorded 16 saves, and the great defense kept Erin Lamina off her feet, as she only saved one shot.

“We kept pressing and kept shooting especially in overtime,” he said. “The goal was going to come but we had to be more assertive in the box and attack. That was our motto when tied but we had to stay organized to not allow a quick counter.”

All facets of the team stepped up according to Murphy, especially freshman Juliana DeGeorge, who had to transition to defense to offense at several points. The back line also was able to keep New Providence in a solid position to win, as Brielle Carleen, Rebecca Pappas, Kelly Sherman, and Nicole Fusco did not allow Hoboken to get off a single shot for the rest of the game.

“We are not the most proficient team scoring goals, and our defense had been solid and it stepped up in not allowing them to get shots off,” Murphy said. “The midfield got the ball up front in the attack, and we were not aiming for goal at first but got more on shots on goal late.”

Murphy continued to praise his squad after the effort they had to give to play hard until the final whistle and to fight to play another game.

“We stepped up as a team but Riley lead by example,” he said. “When they scored, I saw a change in her where she was going to take over, and her play indicated that. We take our season in phases and we’re starting to get hot at the right time. Our mentality is to stay the same, be organized, and get shots off.”

The Pioneers will continue to stage their impressive run Friday against Union County foe Dayton in Springfield on Friday at 3 p.m.

SPRINGFIELD, NJ – Scoring came early and often for the New Providence girl’s varsity soccer team, who came out strong as the 14th-seed to defeat the 6th-seeded county foe Dayton on Friday at Jonathan Dayton High School in Springfield in the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 1 tournament.

The Pioneers (5-13-2, 2-7 UC Valley) put up three goals in the first ten minutes of both halves, and used stout defense to control possession and deny any scoring opportunities to the Bulldogs (7-11-1), who did not score until the final minute of play.

“We were more poised around the box, and there was more pressure Tuesday,” said head coach Scott Murphy. “If it stayed 0-0 we could have been more pressured and may have gotten into that mindset but everything fell into place.”

It was a balanced offensive attack for New Providence, as Riley Kinum and Alana Ponte recorded two goals apiece and Kinum also had two assists. Amanda Maurer and Maddy Engelbrechtsen had a goal and assist each, and Jordan Detlet and Olivia Faucher also had an assist to their name, as the Pioneer support was strong in the stands of a neighboring school, which had a decent New Providence showing.

The Pioneers seemed to have this game from the get-go. Not only did they have 14 shots on goal compared to Dayton’s two, there never seemed to be any reason for the game to be in doubt, especially with the quick scoring outburst to give New Providence a 3-0 lead within the first ten minutes.

“Because of how well we played in the last game, but couldn't convert, doing that was able to help us,” said Murphy. “Scoring early and fast was what really got us going and had us mentally say that we could score.”

New Providence got several of their early goals off of corner kicks. Engelbrechtsen scored off one in the 2nd minute, Ponte’s first goal came on a cross in the box after a corner kick broke down, and Ponte’s second goal came off of a corner kick. Dayton did not record their first shot in the game until 21 minutes into the first half.

New Providence dominates their way to of the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 2 Group 1 semifinals by defeating Dayton 6-1 in the quarterfinals.

New Providence’s Season Ends
with 2-0 Loss at Glen Ridge

BLOOMFIELD, NJ – It was two goals coming in the second half for Glen Ridge that pushed them ahead for good on Tuesday and ended New Providence’s season on the road with a 2-0 loss for the Pioneers in the semifinals of the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 1 tournament.
New Providence (5-14-2) had an impressive end of the season after finishing the regular season at 3-12-2, defeating both Hoboken and Dayton in postseason play. Head Coach Scott Murphy commended his team’s play throughout the game and season.
“Glen Ridge is a good team but we came out and did not play afraid,” Murphy said. “We battled through a rocky start, we knew they were going to throw a lot at us. We held it together in the first half and made adjustments in second half, but they came out the better team.”
The Pioneers stuck strong in the first half, trading chances with Ridgers early on, and played tough through a barrage of Glen Ridge shots. The Pioneers were outshot in shots on goal 16-4 throughout the game.
The second half was filled with more excitement beginning early on. There was a critical no-call in the 46th minute where Alana Ponte was pushed in the box, but no foul was awarded. This lead to a momentum shift when Glen Ridge scored a minute later. The Ridgers also put a goal through in the 67th minute. The Pioneer offense was limited to just a few scoring opportunities in the second half and could not convert any of them to narrow the two goal deficit.
“We came in on a high and played as the underdog and had to leave it all on the field,” Murphy said. “The emotions of the moment and game helped through adversity, and I’m proud of the team and the way we played coming in against a very good team.”
Murphy said that the team did not treat Tuesday as a disappointing loss to end the season.
“Can’t look at today as final memory of season,” he said. “All 25 girls put their heart into the season. I’m happy to say we went out strong, worked hard all year, and had a good, successful, fun year even though it’s all said and done.”
